Zurich, with its lake and the nearby Alps, is not, properly speaking, a very polluted city, but a stroll through the University of Zurich's botanical garden is still a welcome breath of fresh air.
The visual and olfactory attractions are stunning, especially in the large greenhouses, which house more than one-and-a-half million plants. Each of the greenhouses was designed to recreate the environment of three kinds of plants: savannah, tropical, and subtropical. Whatever the season, but especially, of course, during the summer, the garden deserves its due.
After visiting the different sections (Mediterranean, Alpine, etc.), settle in for a picnic around the pond. Though free, the park is generally overlooked by tourists, which makes it even more attractive.
