The Tour of Giants: a stage of the Tour de France

René Vietto, Fausto Coppi, Bernard Hinault all took the yellow jersey in Pau. The last flat stage before the climb into the Pyrenees, Pau salutes the Tour de France.

Though the Tour de France sometimes changes its course, it never fails to go through Pau. This step is one of the largest in the race. It precedes the rise into the Pyrenees. The riders have a day off there and the city of Pau wanted to honour them.

Since 2015, the Tour des Géants has been open in the heart of the old velodrome, which has been turned into a garden. This open-air museum celebrates the winners of the Tour de France. Each rider has their totem, a two-metre-high sculpture in aluminium and glass. The whole forms a yellow spiral. Each totem displays the name and the portrait of the winner of the year, the number of kilometres travelled, and the average speed of the stages, along with additional photos and drawings of the race.

A QR code is stamped on each. By scanning it with a smartphone, you can listen to the story in English, Spanish, or Italian.
