The seven treasures of Qibao

The seven treasures of Qibao

The Old City of Qibao in Shanghai hides many splendours hidden around a bend in the cobblestone streets. The temples, traditional houses and handicrafts are treasures from history, enriched by legends.

You will only need to travel 18 kilometres to leave behind the tumult of the centre of Shanghai. Built more than 1000 years ago, the city of Qibao takes you back in time to revisit the history of old Shanghai.

Legend has it that Qibao—literally the ‘city of seven treasures'—was indeed surrounded by seven wonders: a golden lotus, a millennial tree, a large bell, a golden rooster, a Buddha, chopsticks and an axe of jade. If archaeologists have shown that the first four really existed, only the golden lotus and the big bell are still visible today.

The streets and two waterways that cross the ancient village are lined with traditional houses, temples, gardens and restaurants that serve the local specialty: braised pork with spices. The shops offer a wide range of handicrafts.
