The Ritz Madrid and its enchanting gardens

Pretend you're the ‘Last Tycoon' wandering through the enchanting gardens of the palace, a Fitzgerald novel in hand.

At the dawn of the 20th century, King Alfonso XIII wanted to transform Madrid, at the time a small provincial town, into a European capital of the first order.

Since opening in 1910, the Ritz has supported this change in status, receiving the European aristocracy and the biggest celebrities on the planet, with Nelson Mandela, Salvador Dalí, and Madonna numbering among its storied clientele. Today, the hotel's grandiloquent style is a bit dated but this only adds to its charm.

Antique ornaments and centuries-old tapestries abound in the 154 rooms, which are spacious and yet intimate, with embroidered bed linens and panoramic balconies. The gorgeous gardens are the highlight of the hotel. Escape from the frenetic pace of the city for a bit of tranquillity in a sea of green, barely disturbed by the pianist's soft playing…
