The Monumental Cemetery of Milan

Visit the Monumental Cemetery of the Lombard city, one of the largest and most beautiful in Europe, where each tomb is a work of art.

Far from being a traditional cemetery, this open-air museum presents a real 'gallery' of sculptures, each as impressive as the next, created between the 19th century and today, to pay homage to the dearly departed-authors, composers, architects, painters, men of the Church or actors, most of whom were from well-off families. The departed lie in astonishing decors, some of which are immense, as with the tomb of the last descendant of Mozart.

An oasis of peace and hideout for locals in search of tranquillity, the Monumental Cemetery conceals various touches of Roman and Gothic arts along its alleyways. You can admire a white-marble and red-stone tomb, enriched by Byzantine mosaic, torsade columns and a blue cupola and a sculpted replica of Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper on a tower ten metres high, where the life of Jesus is represented…
