The Asinelli tower, the highest in Bologna

Climb up to the top of the highest tower in Bologna, a sporty stroll gratifying you with a spectacular view over the city.

Bologna is well-known for its towers, counting more than 100 from the 11th to the 13th centuries. Today, just about twenty of these medieval structures have survived time and natural disasters. The 320-feet high Asinelli tower (Torre degli Asinelli) is the city's highest building, with the peculiarity of being slightly at an angle. For three euros, you can go up the 498 steps – occasional athletes take note! – to the summit for a real hike in the heart of the city. Once at the top you can look out over the famous red roofs of the city of Bologna.
The Asinelli tower was built between 1109 and 1119 by the family of the same name. Other than its military purpose, the towers symbolised the social prestige of their owners. At the time, competition between families raged to see who was the wealthiest and most powerful.
