Ray's, a neighbourhood bar with a heart

With its laid-back, friendly vibe, Ray's is a dive bar where décor takes a back seat to company and conversation.

A joint venture between Justin Theroux (of American Psycho and Mulholland Drive fame, to name a few) and owners of other New York hotspots, Ray's is a dive bar by design, reviving a typically American tradition. Intrinsic to modern New York history, these establishments are great neighbourhood bars that cater to regulars looking for a cold beer and conversation around a table. Mayor Rudy Giulani's clean-up in the 1990s saw the city's dive bars gradually replaced by more sterile franchises. But an unexpected shift has seen Lower East Side residents reinvesting in their streets and public spaces. Tapping into a sense of nostalgia for the second half of the 20th century, Ray's will take you right back to that era. With its jukebox, spinning mirror ball, vinyl record décor and wood-panelled walls adding a retro touch, the establishment offers a heart-warming trip back to the 1980s.

Preferring to keep a low profile, Ray's gives out very little information. To really appreciate its vibe, you need to experience it for yourself!
