Ode to art in every shape and form

From masterpieces of painting to the most daring contemporary creations, art is given pride of place through a multitude of galleries all around Manchester.

Paintings, textiles, sculptures, etchings… Whatever the field, Manchester stands out with the sheer number of exhibition areas. The Whitworth Art Gallery, set up on University campus in a red-brick building, is a pioneer in its kind. This century-old gallery reveals, among other things, a large collection of fabric from around the world, some of them going back as far as 300 AD. The glass and steel extension also reveals unobstructed views over the surrounding park.

Visual art lovers will stroll through the exhibition rooms of The Lowry, taking its name from British artist Laurence Stephen Lowry (1887-1976). This key figure of English painting, a large selection thereof being displayed here, was passionate in his depiction of typical scenes of industrial life in the north of the country.

In Manchester, kids are never left out. The Gallery Oldham, hybrid public space halfway between a gallery and a museum, offers playful activities for an educational introduction to painting. As for the Manchester Art Gallery, it sets up workshops where budding creators conceive their own work using salvaged materials. A delight for young and old alike.
