Marriot: Josephine's palace

Marriot: Josephine's palace

In the midst of the Heliopolis district, this idyllic hotel charms with its private artificial beach, gardens and a spa that is not-to-be-missed.

In 1867 the Khedive Ismael decided to build an incredibly luxurious palace in Gezira. Napoleon III's Empress Eugenie kept a marvellous souvenir of it. This palace suffered the vagaries of history and was redeemed in the 1970s by the Marriot group. When you cross the hall, you can admire its arcaded porticoes. The architect who designed them spent six months studying their construction at the Alhambra. Each piece was forged in iron in Germany, numbered and assembled on site. The central part of the hotel is original and has been enlarged on each side.

In the evening, its promenade on the Nile is frequented by locals who come to drink or dine in one of its restaurants (or the casino's), with birds chirping in the background. Every evening their singing is like concerts worthy of Umm Kulthum. Equipped with a water park, the Marriott is perfect for family holidays.
