MAMbo: Italian Contemporary Art to the forefront

Spread over three floors, the Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna (MAMbo) owes its reputation to a wonderful collection of notorious artists and to its role of talent scout.

The city of Bologna loves to create Museums and art centres in historical places. The MAMbo itself is located in a former forno del pane (bread oven) that was transformed over the years as a storage warehouse and then as a museum. The renovation project has been handed to the Milan-based Arassociati architecture agency.

The MAMbo permanent collection is mainly comprised of Italian works of art from WW2 up to now. You can admire the work of Paolo Manaresi, or the still lives of Giorgio Morandi, a painter from Bologna who was awarded the first prize for painting at the 1948 Venice Biennale.

Besides the permanent collection, MAMbo offers a very eclectic program of temporary exhibitions, from the Oreste collective of designers or sarcastic plastician Mika Rottenberg to visual artist Cesare Pietroiusti. And when the must-see David Bowie Is exhibition toured the world, it stopped at MAMbo.
