Hollywood Forever Cemetery, cemetery of the stars

For visitors who want to pay tribute to a favourite star no longer with us, or go to an open-air screening with a difference, the Hollywood Forever Cemetery is just a short walk from Paramount Studios.

Here, in the movie capital of the world, it was only right that the final resting place for Hollywood luminaries should be an extraordinary one. The Hollywood Forever Cemetery was founded in 1899 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The cemetery is a must-see for all film fanatics. Pick up a paper map or consult the digital version on your smartphone and wind your way through its peaceful rows. Here, you will find the graves of Judy Garland, Cecil B. DeMille, Rudolph Valentino and a little further on, those of Douglas Fairbanks, Tyrone Power and Mickey Rooney. As you reach the lake, your eyes will be drawn to the impressive grave of Ramones guitarist, Johnny Ramone. The famous musician is immortalised by a statue atop the monument, of him playing his guitar in full rock mode.

And there are other surprises in store for cemetery visitors. Every Saturday evening from June to September, open-air screenings are held on its leafy central esplanade. On movie nights, once you have purchased your ticket from Cinespia Cemetery Screenings, simply come with a blanket, pillow, or low chair, and take in a Hollywood classic. Be sure to arrive early to take advantage of the DJ, who keeps the cheering crowd entertained with music until the last ray of sun disappears behind the gravestones. Thrill-seekers may be interested to know that there is a special screening at Halloween… Goosebumps are guaranteed!
