Opened 30 August 1993 by King Hassan II, this masterpiece is an architectural feat. Its enormous size, technology, and splendour required six years of construction, and a whole year for the sumptuous decorative work. More than 10,000 of the best artisans from Ouarzazate, Agadir, Fez, and Marrakech worked together to make the mosque into a beautifully sublime showcase of Moroccan craftsmanship. Enter the mosque from the esplanade to admire the minaret, more than 200 metres in height, as well as the titanium royal door. Inside, this vast place of worship accommodates up to 25,000 worshippers. From floor to ceiling, the decor is magical: heated marble travertine floors, hand-carved stucco walls, an open ceiling of carved cedar wood, not to mention the roof, weighing over 1,000 tonnes, which opens and closes automatically in a few seconds! The prayer hall, ablution rooms, and hammam are equally impressive. Note that visits are restricted Friday mornings.
