Frankfurt's opera traditions are second to none

Frankfurt's reputation as a city of the arts is due to its outstanding modern opera house, one of Europe's best. But the old opera house is as strong as ever.

The old opera house, inaugurated by Emperor Wilhelm I in 1880, hosted the first performances of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. It was one of the most beautiful opera houses in Europe for nearly half a century.

Today, it is overshadowed by the spectacular Oper Frankfurt. But the old opera still has life in it. Partly destroyed during the Second World War, it was entirely rebuilt with local tax monies and generous donations.

Since its re-inauguration in 1981, it has hosted concerts and first-rate musicals. The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and London's Academy of Saint Martin-in-the-Fields regularly play here. You can find the programme and buy tickets on the website or at the theatre. Visits are also organised.
