Culture and shopping along the Rue des Arts

Toulon's city centre has seen a rebirth with the opening of the Rue des Arts in 2017. Art galleries, workshops and designer boutiques have gathered on this renovated pedestrian street.

With its galleries, workshops and designers, the Rue des Arts in Toulon is aptly named, to say the least. Formerly "Rue du Canon", rechristened "Rue Pierre-Sémard" in tribute to the union fighter shot by German troops in 1942, it has finally been entirely renovated within the grand project of restoring the whole city centre. The concept here is to rehabilitate and breathe in new life to the public space of this historic neighbourhood, using art themes. Today, lovers of "all things beautiful" take a stroll and attend a contemporary photography exhibition at Galerie 15, discover surprising Naïve art at Créations tropicales and visit artist workshops at Les Frangines. You only need to walk around and look up to experience open-air galleries as various photographs are actually exhibited right in the street. As for shopaholics, they have not been left out and will find various designer boutiques along the street, like By LMS for fashion items and French-made bedding, or AV Bijoux for jewellery like earrings, necklaces and artisan bracelets. On Thursday nights, the Rue des Arts lights up with concerts and art classes, all free of charge.
