A stay fit for a king at Pousada Mosteiro Guimarães

Practically a museum in its own right, this fascinating inn (pousada) is located in a former monastery (mosteiro) and overlooks the medieval town of Guimarães.

The city of Guimarães has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 2002. Back in the 12th century, it was Portugal's first capital city. The first King of Portugal Afonso Henriques strengthened his rule by giving land to the Church and founding many convents, including the Augustin Convent. The former cloisters and cells have been turned into a superb museum hotel, or hotel museum, depending on how you want to see it. It has been redone in 1985 by famous architect Fernando Luís Cardoso de Meneses de Tavares e Távora, also known as "Fernando Távora" - who subsequently redeveloped the city centre. In addition to the hotel's comfortable hotel rooms, all of which are fit for a king, there is also a fascinating bar located in what used to be the monastery's kitchen – you will never get tired of looking at it. And neither will you of its chapter house, deep couches facing the huge fireplace, or terrace overlooking the city and gardens with their olive groves and orchard spread out over twenty-five acres.
